<intro>

In a time of rampant celebrity atonement, Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is yet another star who claims he has turned a sordid corner.

Speaking to reporters from the Detroit Tigers' spring training facility in Florida, Cabrera addressed his bizarre ending in Detroit's disappointing 2009 season. While the Tigers were in lockstep with the Minnesota Twins for the AL Central title, Cabrera found himself in jail, drunk, waiting for general manager Dave Dombrowski to pick him up. Cabrera's face was gashed during a fight with his wife.

Cabrera's blood-alcohol content was .26, and he was scheduled to play first base 12 hours later in a critical game against the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers lost the division lead and a one-game playoff to the Twins.

After getting treatment for alcohol abuse and apologizing to his teammates for his untimely clash with the law, Cabrera bristled at any notion that he is an alcoholic. "If I worry about what everybody is saying, there is going to be a lot on my mind," Cabrera said. "I don't want that. I want to do everything I can to play baseball."

Cabrera, 26, has had an enigmatic career. He is at once a transcendent talent who plays the game with frequent apathy. A young man with a .311 average for his career and 209 home runs, he plays the field with little care and is often overweight.

On the front end of a $152 million contract, Miguel Cabrera can be a legend or another soul swallowed by the myriad temptations of stardom. And it seems the choice is his.

    <intro>
The Detroit Tigers begin their Grapefruit league schedule next week and the club will start looking to firm up its starting rotation.

Justin Verlander is the ace and Rick Porcello, who went 14-9 with a 3.96 ERA last year as a rookie, are the Tigers’ one and two starters. Max Scherzer, who was acquired in the Edwin Jackson trade with the Diamondbacks, is expected to be the third starter.

Beyond these three right-handed pitchers, the final two spots are open with possibly six pitchers competing for them. The performance of these six pitchers and Scherzer will determine whether the Tigers will make it to the playoffs.

Of the six, the Tigers are hoping Jeremy Bonderman, 27, can recapture his form after nearly a two-year layoff after having circulatory surgery. Reports from the Tigertown in Lakeland, FL, say he is throwing with the same velocity he had in 2006, when the club went to the World Series.

But Bonderman is still plagued by not having a third pitch. If he struggles as a starter, he will most likely be a long reliever. Bonderman is in the final year of his contract.

Nate Robertson, 32, is also in the final year of his contract and the lefthander should be looking to have a contract year. He was relegated to the bullpen for the first half of the season and had surgery to remove nodules from his left elbow in June.

The Tigers would like the lefthander in the rotation after he finished strong in September. However, he won’t capture a spot if he is the pitcher he was on 2008 and 2007 when he lost 11 and 13 games respectively.

Dontrelle Willis will also try and regain his form, his confidence and control, which have been lacking since he joined the Tigers in 2008. While manager Jim Leyland said on Friday that Willis, 28, looks like a different person, he would be a big surprise if the lefthander returns to solid pitching form. Willis is also in his final year of his contract.

A sleeper could be Armando Galarraga. The 28-year-old righthander was a big surprise in 2008, but collapsed last year after a couple of brilliant starts to open the season. Reports say that his slider has returned.

Eddie Bonine and Phil Coke are the dark horse candidates to become starters.

Coke, who came from the Yankees in the trade with Curtis Granderson, is expected to pitch out of the bullpen, but would be in the rotation if all or most of the four pitchers mentioned above can’t make the rotation.

The same is true with Bonine, who developed a knuckleball last year. Bonine always seems to pitch well when the Tigers need him. It would be a shame to lose him.

If Bonderman, Robertson, Willis and Galarraga pitch well in spring training expect at least one of them packaged off in a trade.

If that happens, Bonderman or Galarraga would be trade bait.
<intro>
The Johnny Damon headline read: “I want to finish my career as a Tiger.”

“I would love that,” Damon was quoted in The Detroit News.

He praised the club and the Motor City, saying he always wanted to play for the Tigers.

True or not, Damon is lobbying for next season’s contract.

Damon, 36, knows after this season the Tigers will no longer have big money contracts on their books – the salaries of Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson, Dontrelle Willis, Brandon Inge and possibly Magglio Ordonez will be gone. That’s more than $50 million.

So when Damon signed his one-year, $8 million contract to play left field a few days ago, he is aiming to be rewarded as his former Yankees teammate Bobby Abreu, who took a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels in 2009 before producing for a bigger contract this off season.

But Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski has been shrewd this off season, spending money on needed veterans at certain positions, but setting the club up for the long run.

Dombrowski traded Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson in a three-team trade Dec. 9, for pitchers Phil Coke, Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth and center fielder Austin Jackson. This happened after the Tigers decided not to keep free agents Placido Polanco, Fernando Rodney and Brandon Lyon.

These moves were labeled as a salary dump, and some other owners tightened their purse strings, creating a situation where the market didn’t drive up the price for Damon or other veterans.

But then, the Tigers signed closer Jose Valverde in January to a two-year, $14 million contract, and then Damon to add to the four new young players they got in the trade.

“I have to admit, it did seem like something bad was happening when we made that trade and lost those free agents,” Tiger third baseman Inge told the Chicago Tribune. “But now you look around the clubhouse, you see the young guys we got in that trade, and you say, ‘Oh, I get it.’”

The Tigers want to win or at least contend in an improved American League Central Division. The club also wants to position itself as a contender for the future.

So will a bigger contract for Damon after this season fit Dombrowski’s plan for the future? Probably not, because it would be a better investment to take some of that money coming off the books and try and sign left fielder Carl Crawford.

Crawford, 28, is probably the best left fielder in the league. He hit .305 with 15 home runs, scored 96 runs and stole 60 bases last season with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Crawford is in his final year of a six-year contract with the Rays and will be paid $10 million.
The market value for Crawford, a three-time All-Star player, could be as high as $15 million a season under a new contract, The Tampa Tribune reported.

If the Tigers decide to keep Ordonez for 2011, his salary will be $15 million. Dombrowski should be planning right now who will be in left next year and Crawford should be on the top of that list, not Damon.
<intro>
The saga appears to have ended. Johnny Damon and the Detroit Tigers have come to a one-year $8 million deal, according to reports by several news organizations.

The contract has a no-trade clause, the Detroit Fee Press reports. So if the Tigers fall out of this season’s playoff race, Damon can’t be traded to a club he doesn’t want to play for.

No announcement has been made by the Tigers because the deal is expected to be officially announced after Damon, 36, passes a physical, Yahoo.com and SI.com reported.

Damon will likely leadoff or bat second in manager Jim Leyland’s lineup. He will be the Tigers’ regular left fielder, news reports have speculated.

The former Yankee bats left handed and last season hit .282 with 24 home runs and 82 RBIs. He has a career on-base percentage of .355.

Damon’s agent Scott Boras began courting the Tigers three weeks ago. Boras seems to have persuaded Tigers owner Mike Ilitch that Damon wanted to play in Detroit.

This came after the Yankees or other teams didn’t offer Damon the salary he wanted because of a bad economy. Not many teams were willing to offer aging stars the free agent money of past years.

Even after reports that the Tigers offered Damon a contract, Boras held out hoping other teams would better Detroit’s offer. But that never happened, and the Tigers won out in the waiting game.

With the arrival of Carlos Guillen and Damon, the Tigers current left fielder should become a fulltime designated hitter. Damon will also push Ryan Raburn, who was also competing for the left field job, to the pines as a super-sub.
<intro>
There’s an empty locker waiting at Tigertown in Lakeland, Florida and an offer on the table for free agent outfielder Johnny Damon to take.

The locker is in front of manager Jim Leyland’s office and it has been used to store some extra batting helmets, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. But those helmets are gone now, and the locker could go to Damon or batting instructor Andres Galarraga, Beck wrote.

The Tigers confirmed Thursday that they offered Damon a contract and that offer might be the only one left for the former Yankee, now that the Chicago White Sox have pulled their deal off the table.

Chicago media has reported that the White Sox’s offer was a one-year deal worth as much as $6 million.

Beck reported that White Sox General Manager Ken Williams rescinded the offer because he didn't want speculation over the Damon signing to turn into a distraction for the players already in the Sox’s camp, which opens on Sunday.

The White Sox, however, aren’t officially out of the bidding because Williams told the Chicago Sun-Times that he would be willing to talk should Damon or his agent Scott Boras if they changed their minds by Sunday morning about accepting the White Sox’s offer.

Although Tiger General Manager Dave Dombrowski hasn’t confirmed the amount of the Detroit offer, reports have speculated that Damon was offered a two-year, $14 million contract. ESPNChicago.com cited a Major League source saying that the Tigers are only offering a $7 million one-year deal.

Even before the White Sox pulled their offer, Dombrowski sounded confident about signing Damon earlier on Friday, according to Beck.

“I'm not closing it off,” he told MLB.com, “but I'm not saying it’s done by any means. We’re still in it.”

The Detroit News’ Lynn Henning wondered in a story on Friday why Dombrowski spoke with gusto about his club’s offer.

Henning asked was it because the Tigers were closing in on Damon and that his offers have dwindled to one: theirs. Or was it that the Tigers were in command now that Boras used Detroit’s offer over the last several weeks to try and get better offers from other bidders: the White Sox and Atlanta Braves?

Although Boras’ attempt to use the Tigers hasn’t gone over well with the front office and fans, Detroit desperately needs Damon, Henning said.

The loss of the team’s leadoff and number two hitters, Curtis Granderson and Placido Polanco, has opened void at the top of the order, Henning wrote.

The 36-year old left-handed hitting Damon hit .282 in 143 games with 107 runs scored, 24 homeruns, and 82 RBIs last year for the Yankees.

The Tigers remain at the table, hungry to sign Damon, Henning said. Whether he signs or not the Tigers will not forget Boras’ negotiations crusade, Henning added.

Could that payback happen later this season with another Boras client Magglio Ordonez?

Despite a poor first half last year, the Tigers allowed Ordonez to get the at bats needed to get $18 million for the 2010 season. By allowing Ordonez to get the at bats and vest for this season and not releasing him for $3 million, the Tigers severely hampered their chances during this off season to improve the team and probably caused the Tigers to trade Granderson and now pursue Damon.

A similar at bats situation occurs this season, and if Ordonez has a poor start again will he get the plate appearances to be paid $15 million for 2011?

Only time and the season will tell if Boras and Ordonez pay for the Damon signing saga.

</intro>

    <intro>
Tigers President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed for the first time in a story by The Lakeland Ledger that Detroit has offered a contract to free agent outfielder Johnny Damon.

There have been reports for several weeks that Dombrowski and Damon’s agent Scott Boras have been talking, but the Tigers have never confirmed that there were negotiations, let alone a contract offer.

“I can confirm that we have talked and that we have offered him (Damon) a contract," Dombrowski told the newspaper, which is located in the same Florida town where the Tigers hold spring training.

Dombrowski declined to say what the Tigers offered the former Yankee, according to The Ledger.

Reports over the last week have speculated that the Tigers offered Damon two years for $14 million and one year for $7 million. The newspaper said Dombrowski wouldn’t confirm those figures.

Detroit and the Chicago White Sox have been the main competitors this week for Damon, according to newspaper and blog reports over the last several days.

A Chicago newspaper on Thursday has been reporting that the Tigers will sign Damon but nothing has been announced yet. Some reports have said that Detroit has already cleared out a locker for Damon at its spring training complex.

In another report, Detroit manager Jim Leyland said rookie centerfielder Austin Jackson, who was obtained in the Curtis Granderson trade with the Yankees, will leadoff. However, Leyland said rookie Scott Sizemore wouldn’t bat second, something journalists had speculated since former number two hitter Placido Polanco signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Tigers want to sign Damon because he has hit leadoff and in the second slot with the Yankees. Damon would most likely play left field for the Tigers and bat second.
</intro>

    <intro>
Yankee bloggers (i-yankees, TYU and others) have been writing this week that the Bronx Bombers “got away with one” when they acquired Curtis Granderson in December.

The bloggers said the Yanks took advantage of the Tigers’ schizophrenia over to first cut salary in the off season and then Detroit changed its decision because American League Central Division rivals, the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins, have beefed up their line ups.

These blogs were spawned by A Detroit News story by Lynn Henning earlier this week about Johnny Damon and how poor the Tigers’ offense will be this year.

In the story, Henning wrote that Tigers owner Mike Ilitch wanted to pare back salary at the beginning of the off-season. He did so by not offering Placido Polanco arbitration because they didn’t want to pay their former second baseman $8 or $9 million a year, Henning said.

Then, Ilitch reconsidered his decision in order to become competitive.

Nowhere in the Henning story did he write that the Granderson trade was a salary dump.
That’s because Henning wrote in a December 9 story that the Tigers decided to cut ties with fan favorite Granderson because his production declined and his activities outside of baseball spread the centerfielder too thin.

Even Henning’s colleague, Tiger beat writer Tom Gage wrote in his blog on Dec. 8, “I'm not thinking of this as a salary dump.”

“There were enough hazy factors about him for the Tigers to have concerns about his future—his inability to hit lefties this year (.183), his declining batting average as a leadoff hitter (.241), and the fact that his batting average went down in each of the last four months of the 2009 season,” Gage wrote at the time of the trade.

In what seemed to be sparked by this week’s Yankee blog posts, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal agreed with Henning and Gage in a story Wednesday that the Granderson trade wasn’t a salary dump.

“Several parts of Granderson's game regressed last season: His routes in center field; his ability to make contact; his performance against left-handed pitching,” Rosenthal wrote.

“All that surely was enough for Tigers officials to rationalize the deal, particularly when Granderson and pitcher Edwin Jackson were their only attractive trade chips,” Rosenthal added.

Rosenthal then said the only negative that Tiger Manager Jim Leyland raised when he interviewed him for the story was that Granderson might have been too occupied with his community and charitable work in Detroit.

“He was one of those guys who wouldn't say no to anybody,” Leyland told Fox Sports.

Granderson trade rumors surfaced last season as his hitting and fielding slumped. It was obvious to Tiger fans, even though they didn’t want to trade him.

Should the Tigers have traded him, probably not as they wait on Damon to decide to play in Detroit or Chicago. But management saw an opportunity to improve for this season and the future by getting four good players or prospects for two players. And only time will tell whether it was a good trade.
</intro>

    <intro>
It is not official as of yet, but reports surfacing today say that Johnny Damon is close to accepting a two-year, $14 million deal that the Tigers offered to him over a week ago.

According to reports, the Tigers have already cleared out a locker for Damon at their spring training camp in Lakeland, Fla.

It has been reported that Damon, 36, could possibly sign the deal with the Tigers and make it official in the next couple of days.

Position players are scheduled to report to camp on Monday and the first full workout for the team will be on Tuesday.

There have also been rumors that the Chicago White Sox were also in the running for Damon and that he could possibly sign a deal with them. However, general manager Kenny Williams said today that he would talk about the possible Damon deal on Sunday, so it does not sound very promising that the Sox will sign him.

Although, Williams does have a history of ignoring media requests when he is on the cusp of making a big trade or signing a free agent for the White Sox, so anything is still possible at this point.

Either way, it looks as if Damon will have a deal signed with either the Tigers or the White Sox within the next couple of days.

</intro>

    <intro>
A story by MLB.com’s Jason Beck sows some doubt that Scott Sizemore will be the Detroit Tigers’ starting second baseman this season after shattering his ankle last year in the Arizona Fall League.

Sizemore, a hotshot prospect, was anointed by management as the team’s starting second baseman for this season even before last season’s starter Placido Polanco became a free agent.

Beck wrote that Sizemore is recuperating and making good progress—good enough that the second base job remains his to lose.

But Sizemore told Beck he is not 100 percent yet, adding that it has been slow progress but “we’re getting there.”

Sizemore said it was a little surreal to have six pins and a titanium plate in his ankle, and he sometimes forgets those pins and plate are in his ankle.

“It’s easy to forget,” Sizemore told MLB.com. “And then you just move the wrong way one time, and it’s a short, quick reminder that it’s still in there and it’s still not right.”

Beck’s post comes just hours after The Detroit News’ Lynn Henning filed a story where Kevin Rand, the Tigers' head athletic trainer, said Sizemore is progressing very well since suffering the injury.

“He’s been here since January, and doing everything: taking ground balls, hitting, and now we're in the final process of base running,” Rand told The News.

But Sizemore told Beck that he’s not as quick or as explosive that he wants to be taking groundballs, but he doesn’t worry about it because that will come with time and more hard work.

“My injury kind of prevents me from getting ahead of myself," he told MLB.com.

Sizemore added that he has worried that he might lose his chance to start at second because of the injury. But his progress at recuperating and his hard work getting prepared for the season has got him thinking he has a chance at starting this year.

If he doesn’t win the starting job, the Tigers could run Ramon Santiago, Don Kelly or Carlos Guillen into the position. If they don’t work out, then Detroit’s Dave Dombrowski needs to give his old team, the Florida Marlins, a call and see if Dan Uggla is available.
</intro>

    <intro>
If Johnny Damon signs with Detroit, the Tigers’ outfield will have a different look.

A Damon signing could also have an impact on another Scott Boras client, Magglio Ordonez, especially if he begins this season as poorly as he did last year.

With Damon, the outfield competition will tighten in center and right fields as the Tigers will have seven potential outfielders – Damon, Guillen, Ordonez, Clete Thomas, Ryan Raburn, Don Kelly and rookie Austin Jackson.

A plan by Jim Leyland to put Damon in left field, Jackson in center and Ordonez in right sounds logical, but like in war plans change in baseball, once the first pitch is thrown.

This season is either a make it or say good bye one for Thomas and Kelly. Thomas showed some promise filling in for an injured Curtis Granderson at the beginning of the 2008 season. That season, he hit .284, but it ended in Tommy John surgery. Thomas hit .253 with 8 home runs last year coming back from the injury.

Don Kelly was a hotshot hitting shortstop prospect in the Tiger farm system after Detroit drafted him in 2001. He became a free agent after the 2006 minor league season and was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007 and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008. Seeing that he still had some promise, the Tigers resigned him to a minor league contract in 2009. He now plays most infield and all outfield positions and is a good defender.

Both Kelly and Thomas are left handed hitters and good defensive outfielders. Jackson will be competing with Thomas and Kelly for the centerfield job, but might need another year of seasoning in AAA before he takes over center field. If Jackson can’t win the major league job, which is a good possibility, either Thomas or Kelly will prowl centerfield in 2010. The other could be trade bait.

Kelly also could be a backup to shortstop Adam Everett, especially if rookie Scott Sizemore doesn’t make the team as the starting second baseman and Ramon Santiago plays second. If Sizemore and Jackson both don’t make the team and/or are injured then Thomas most likely is the centerfielder.

Right field could also be a challange. Leyland likes Raburn, who has a strong outfield arm and he is just as good or even better than Ordonez as an outfielder. Raburn hit .291 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs in 113 at bats last year.

If Ordonez starts out poorly as he did last season, which is a possibility, a Damon signing might lead to Raburn playing right and Ordonez splitting time with Guillen as a combined $28 million designated hitter.

A poor start by Maggs, Raburn in right and Ordonez splitting time at DH would also give the Tigers the option to not let Ordonez to get the plate appearances in order to vest his contract for 2011.

So who do you think will get the Tiger outfield slots this year?
<intro>
It will be interesting to see how manager Jim Leylend uses Carlos Guillen if the Detroit Tigers sign Johnny Damon as their everyday left fielder.

Baseball writer Tom Gage in a story for The Detroit News said Guillen would be the odd man out if Damon signed.

That could be true, but Guillen is signed through 2011 and there is little chance that Leyland benches Guillen, who the Tiger manager likes and calls the team’s leader.

Sure Guillen could become the Tiger’s DH against right-handed pitchers, but he wants to play the field.

In a tiff with Leyland last year, Guillen expressed his displeasure in October at how he was used in 2009. He said he wanted to be a full-time player and not the part-time player he was in the second half of 2009. Guillen even hinted that he still wanted to play the infield.

Leyland said at the time, “Carlos Guillen is our left fielder.” The Tigers’ skipper also said he would play everyday in left. But a Damon signing would nix that plan.

However, there could be a scenario where Guillen could get his wish of playing a full nine innings at a position and it could be in the infield.

The Tigers are relying on rookie Scott Sizemore to be their everyday second baseman. Sizemore broke his left ankle in the Arizona Fall League and pins were inserted into his left fibula.

Although the Tigers are saying that Sizemore will be ready, that is not a guarantee that he is fully healed or won’t re-injure the tender ankle after such a serious injury.

Looking at the past several seasons where Tiger management have said players like Joel Zumaya, Nate Robertson and others would be ready and weren’t, the odds favor that Sizemore could not be ready. Let’s hope not for the rookie’s sake, but there is a chance.

That would leave the Tigers with Adam Everett at shortstop and Ramon Santiago at second. But what about against right-handed pitchers. Everett has a problem hitting against right handers.

Could Guillen play shortstop or second base? It might be Leyland’s only option and Guillen would get his wish. What do you think?
</intro>

    <intro>
The Detroit Tigers and ace Justin Verlander avoided arbitration by reportedly agreeing to a 5-year, $80 million contract Wednesday according to a source familiar with the situation. The new contract significantly raises Verlander's yearly salary, as last year he made $3,675,000.

Verlander shook off a subpar 2008 to set several career marks in in 2009 including: Starts (35), ERA (3.45), WHIP (1.18), Wins (19), Innings Pitched (240) and Strikeouts (269).

The deal, which averages out to $16 million per season, is just above the 5-year, $78 million deal recently signed by Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.

The source said that the deal could be announced as early as Thursday, but nothing was officially announced by the Tigers Wednesday.
</intro>

    <intro>
The rain in Detroit got in the way of the Tigers trying to give away the AL Central.

The First Updated Version of this showdown appeared here.

And I thought there would eventually be a winner. I never anticipated that mother nature would add a commentary about the series by postponing it a day.

In my original posts, I was trying to anticipate different outcomes from the weekend games. But those are all history now. From the weekend, the Tigers still are holding on to a two game lead. In the earlier previews, it was the 3rd of 5 outcomes.

The 3rd outcome: The series starts with a 2 game lead for Detroit.

This is where it starts to get desperate for the Twins, because Detroit could win the Central by winning 3 out of 4, and not needing the sweep. However, a Minnesota sweep still gives them a 2 game lead going into the final weekend. If the Twins take 3 out of 4, the two teams would go into the final weekend in a tie. A split would keep the Detroit lead at 2 games.

After the rain out on Monday, half of the series will be determined in the double header on Tuesday. By the end of the day, Minnesota could tie the Central, the lead could stay at two games for Detroit or the magic number could be reduced to two. Again from the earlier previews, the pitching probables were listed like this:

Detroit will be home for the big series. Still, Minnesota is clearly the team with momentum. And the saying goes that momentum is only as good as tomorrow's starting pitcher. The Probables...

Monday's game has Nick Blackburn of the Twins facing Rick Porcello for the Tigers.

Tuesday Brian Duensing goes for Minnesota while Detroit has their ace, Justin Verlander.

Wednesday the Twins have Carl Pavano scheduled. Detroit is listed as Eddie Bonine.

Thursday the Twins list Scott Baker and Detroit is TBA.

Not sure if TBA is any relation to the player to be named later, the one that is in so many trades.

With the rainouts, both teams have maintained the pitching matchups. Personally, I think that the Tigers should have Verlander going in the first game, not the night cap. He is their best pitcher, and they could start the series right by starting him in game 1. How much more rest is gained in waiting for the nightcap? Detroit has also announced that Nate Robertson will be the starter on Thursday.

The grand prize for all of this? A trip to New York to face the Yankees in the ALDS. A question for the Yankees, would they rather face a Tiger team struggling to the finish or a Twins team that made a late season surge? Personally, I still am rooting for a tie, and a Monday game in Minnesota for a one game playoff. Followed by a Monday Night battle with Brett Favre hosting his former Green Bay team. You can't script it better than that.

    <intro>
Certain teams have a voice that will always be the voice of the team.

For the Celtics, it was Johnny Most. The Dodgers always make me think of Vin Scully. And for the Tigers, it was Ernie Harwell. Harwell announced that he has inoperable cancer.

At age 91, there is no doubt he certainly got a lot out of his life here on Earth. The Bible promises 70 years, and for me, that always seems to be the boundary of when I would say someone died too young. So 91 is like going into overtime, or for Harwell, extra innings.

Still, endings can be sad, just because of the finality of it. In the above referenced AP article, Harwell said "So-called fame is fleeting", which doesn't seem true to me about Harwell. The Tigers aren't even my team. If I have to admit, they were my first wife's team. Still, I've been to more Tigers games then any team other than my team, the Red Sox. I spent plenty of time at the original Tiger Stadium and at Comerica Park. And when I wasn't at the game, I was listening to Harwell on the radio.

Harwell's voice was perfect for baseball. Whereas Most had a gruffy voice and would get quite excited during Celts playoffs, Harwell always had a calming effect. He kept his southern accent. He was born in Georgia. Having moved from Boston to the South, I've realized that you take a little more time doing things when you are in the South. And baseball is the kind of game where you can take plenty of time. The game is always there, teams play just about every day. And Harwell was always there, he was the Tiger's announcer for 42 years.

His voice was soothing, like Scully on the Dodgers. A few years back, when I had the Direct TV MLB package, I would drift off to sleep listening to Scully work alone on the play by play. My son had a Playstation game that featured Scully, and I would play the game just to listen to Scully. Scully worked alone often on TV, but he was a radio man at heart. Harwell, like Scully, knew how a good radio announcer would paint a picture for the listener. From the AP article “... 'He stood there like the house by the side of the road,' (Harwell) might say of a batter taking a called third strike."

Another nice angle from the AP article was that Harwell is a man of faith, and believes that he knows where he is going. And someday, we're all going to die, so it's nice to have some peace when that time comes. God Bless You, Ernie Harwell.

    <intro>
     Returning home after a long road trip did wonders to revive the Detroiters sleeping bats. In a game shortened to 7 innings by a steady downpour, the Tigers cleared the fences 4 times to score 10 runs and give relief pitcher Zach Miner his fourth win against only one loss.

   Led by cleanup hitter Marcus Thames who popped a 2 run fence clearer in the 1st and then matched it in the 7th, the Tigers claimed a much neeeded victory. The bullpen held the Brewers scoreless over the last 3 innings. Starter Armando Galarraga was touched for 3 runs in the 1st, one of them unearned and another in the 4th, He continues to struggle and watched as his ERA climbed to 5.62 during a less than average performance. Curtis Granderson and Miguel Cabrera also contributed home runs to the 11 hit attack. Rookie catcher Dusty Ryan just called up from AAA Toledo got the start behind the plate and contributed a run scoring double off the top of the left field fence.

The Brewers scored 3 in the first on a Prince Fielder 3 run shot and another in the 4th on a sacrifice fly off the bat off Craig counsel. Both starting pitchers failed to return after a lengthy rain delay in the fourth.
</intro>

    <intro>
Tiger executives announced today that manager Jim Leyland has been awarded a contract extension through 2011.

     There are a few reasons I can think of for doing this but none will warrant the approval of real Tiger fans. Last year he retained a pitching coach who failed miserably to correct a talented young group of pitchers. Loyalty to one coach left the fans in Detroit to suffer through a losing season in what was generally expected to be a year the Tigers returned to the World Series. Combine that with too many intentional walks from a staff struggling to find it’s control and you wind up with what was a debacle.

     To compound the situation, Leyland admitted not preparing the team properly during Spring Training. Toss in too many hit and runs, and not enough bunts to move runners into scoring position and you manage a team into last place. Personally I don’t lay blame on the players. I place them squarely on the shoulders of the team executives and game management. Jim Leyland has become one of those failures who tends to over-manage a team.

     I don’t get into the clubhouse nor do I talk with the players, but the general feeling I get is that the team no longer respects nor believes in Leyland as a manager. He has failed to motivate them and talks of getting younger players into the lineup to generate energy, an admittance of his failure. The move to extend his contract was a desperation move from upstairs to give him credibility by removing the lame duck manager from the front of his name. At current count he has managed the team directly to 9 losses. This is because of bad lineups, bad pitching changes, the failure to press the opposing team and what seems is a total misunderstanding of his players’ capabilities. Being a believer in what was once said by a previous Tiger manager “Managers do not win games. They can only lose them.” Leyland is a failure.

     The current retention of a hitting coach who has been unable to correct the problems of some outstanding hitters is detrimental to the team. His coaching staff is loaded with coaches who have losing records previously as managers. Leyland himself does not have an enviable record. All in all they have had few successes, and those are vastly outnumbered by their failures. There can be a case made that they did not have the best teams to manage, but don’t good managers get the best out of their players. Isn’t Rick Knapp succeeding with the pitching staff even though the pressure on them is mounting because of a non-existant hitting attack? Aren’t our infield and outfield coaches experiencing a sense of success?

     Jim Leyland, year in / year out leads or is near the top at directing his pitchers to issue intentional walks. Doesn’t this send a message to them that he lacks confidence in them? Now I personally understand that Ordonez is struggling to find his power stroke.

     I also understand that he was at the bedside of his wife after she recently underwent an operation in Venezuela. I don’t know the extent of this, but it could be playing on his mind. I do know he has been a fan favorite and given everything he has to the Tigers, and I also know they have been patient with him. The hitting coach has failed to bring him out of his slump. Yes he needs to take a week off and maybe get straightened out, but for a manager to say that he is out of the lineup and has no idea when he will put him back in, shows little respect for Magglio. Even in his current slump, he is a better player then those replacing him, (Rayburn and Anderson), and is hitting about 40 points higher than both of them. Could it be the option requirements on his contract? Why has he not given Thames the chance to play more often with the team in a slump? He supplies a major amount of power to a team desperately looking to score runs.

     I would have given anything to play, coach or manage in the Major Leagues, but never would I have not accepted the blame for where this team is. My best wishes to them. I hope they succeed. I also hope Dombrowski doesn’t make any more foolish trades such as the one for Renteria. That was a no brainer and so one sided for Atlanta that anyone off the streets would have said no thank you to the Braves. Sometimes the trades you don’t make are the best trades. Mr. Ilitch deserves better and I genuinely hope he receives it. Growing up a block from Tiger Stadium, Briggs Stadium at that time, was a wonderful part of my life. There are golden memories of the Tigers embedded deep in my heart and seeing them snatch failure from victory burns at my entire being. I truly believe that a good travel coach would do better at managing this professional team than does the current manager.
</intro>

    <intro>
I feel it has become nessecary for one Dontrell Willis to look in the mirror before every start and recite the great lessons of Cool Running.

"I see pride! I see power! I see a bad mutha who don't take s&%# from no one!"

I am not one that easily loses faith. I still maintain that the Detroit Pistons would've had a title shot had Grant Hill have stayed, I will argue till the death that one day soon, Barry Sanders will dawn the 20 and score from the 35, and I still have the belief Dontrell has it.

Let's look at this logically, 6 runs and 8 walks against the potent offense of Pittsburgh, that is not good. Does that mean he loses his spot in the rotation? I say no. It's a complete confidence issue so the solution seems pretty simple to me. Do all you can to avoid Thursday or Sunday starts for D-Train as Leyland loves to rest his big cats on these days to maximize run production behind and keep a close eye on his control.

If Leyland can keep faith in the arm of Brandon Lyon, who by all rights should be a White Cap, show a bit in Dontrell. Armonda will turn it around, it's only a matter of time but Dontrell needs a confidence boost to get back to form and going into a post season with Dontrell Willis as a 4th game starter would be a great option to have.
</intro>

    <intro>
In a game marked by poor pitching, poor hitting and poor fielding, the Detroiters resembled the inept team of last year more than the first place team of 2009.

     Starting pitcher Justin Verlander who has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball for the last six weeks, was roughed up by the St. Louis Cardinals and lasted only four innings. He allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks while posting 4 Ks to close out his pitching line. Reliever Nate Robinson fared even worse, giving up 4 runs in the fifth without recording an out. Ryan Perry and Brandon Lyon pitched the last 4 innings. Perry allowed 400 foot solo home runs to Pujols and Duncan in the 6th to round out the Cardinals scoring. Duncan and 2nd baseman Schumaker contributed 3 hits to the St. Louis onslaught.

     Detroit scored on solo home runs off the bats of Miguel Cabrera and Brandon Inge. In the first inning they failed to plate a leadoff triple, leaving Don Kelly stranded at first base in what is becoming a too common failing..

     The Tigers weak hitting continues and is now a major concern to upper management. This is one Detroit fan who hopes they don't entertain thoughts of moving one of their top 3 starters to acquire a hitter. That woud be a move of desperation and would essentially wrap up their season before the end of June.

     It may be time to let Leyland, McClendon and Lamont go. Leyland has failed to light a fire under his team and his lineups are becoming more questionable by the game. It's also apparent that no matter how hard McClendon works to correct the hitting, any progress made is being overshadowed by continuing failures to drive in runners from scoring position.

     Bite the bullet Dombrowski and make the coaching changes that are needed. It's not too late to salvage the season. This team is losing heart fast and running Willis out to pitch every fifth game is adding fuel to the fire.
</intro>
